A friend of mine tells a story of a large chain restaurant purchaser who demanded that her steaks be kept near the wall of the freezer “because it’s colder there”. It was a large order…and most people would have done anything to secure that large of an order. But the salesman replied with a critical question:
“How cold do you want your steaks?”
After a brief pause, she said “29 degrees.” And he agreed to an end result…not to an arbitrary process change that may (or may not) have accomplished the objective.
The next time someone tries to tell you how to do your job, take a step back and get a clear objective that can be agreed upon. Find out what they are trying to accomplish
Now, Everyone wins.
Thanks for listening.
