I was recently talking to a leader who supervises a team of 30 to 40 people. He commented on his workload, saying “I have too much on me. Therefore, I am pushing my people to step up and carry more.”
If he was your supervisor, would that inspire you? Does his motive for delegating encourage you to take on more responsibility? He probably didn’t intend it that way…but it sounded like he wanted his team to make it easier on him as a leader. That isn’t the purpose of delegation.
We delegate so that we can give our best energy to those tasks and projects that no one else can do…so that we can make a bigger impact for the organization. Our workload does not decrease when we delegate.
Other reasons to delegate include:
- To invest in other people, to develop their abilities
- When they can actually do a better job than I can, to improve the organization
- So that I can fight other battles before they arrive in the organization…to protect our people
Thanks for listening.
