I was recently engaged in a significant, personal, leadership conversation when my phone started going crazy. Someone wanted to talk, but I ignored it. I was involved in something more important. After the 4th or 5th round of calls…I responded with an exasperated “WHAT?”
Meekly, one of my teammates said “boss…one of our trucks is on fire.” Okay – that was a good reason. Yes…PLEASE interrupt me for something like that important!
But, most of the time, its a bad idea to interrupt the boss (or anyone else for that matter). Here are some good steps to consider before interrupting:
- Is this something I can handle myself?
- Is this something that can wait?
- Am I interrupting for my sake…or for theirs?
- Is someone they care about in trouble?
Most of the time I interrupt, I am really violating one of those guidelines. What about you?
Thanks for listening.
PS: The truck is fine. The fire was minor. The biggest problem actually came as a result of the driver climbing under the truck to spray his fire extinguisher….and forgetting to close his mouth (they actually create quite the dust cloud…..)
