You know that feeling…when everything is running like normal until something happens (or is said) that makes time stand still for a moment. When that happens, I gain a new perspective on life (or “the issue”)…never to return to my old way of thinking.
It happened this week.
I was on a conference call with two companies that we work with…along with a leader from another department. I was clearly settled on the root cause of the problem being discussed. Everyone else was acting without including me. After all, I had the answers…and everyone else was the problem. (You know where this is going)
When I realized the problem did not lie with anyone else, time seemed to actually come to a complete stop. The root cause of the issue was my perspective. In the flash of an eye, I was able to see the events that had unfolded to create that moment.
Countless decisions had been made over the last 3 years, decisions which had positioned us out of reach of a solution. There was no malice involved. There was no incompetence. There was no failure to include someone at the table. There was nothing but the simple fact that I was not able to achieve success in my project. I can’t be mad at anyone for that.
The good news is that it is not permanent. But now, I have some decisions to make:
- I can change course and pursue a new strategy for my goal
- I can change my goal
- I can sit here and whine about the cards I’ve been dealt
Here is an idea. Let’s all act our age and stop choosing option #3.
Thanks for listening.
