It is common to look at a situation and scratch my head…wondering “who in the world came up with that stupid idea?” I look at things from my perspective and use my own knowledge and experience to evaluate the plan.
But, it is fairly arrogant to think I am the standard by which things should be evaluated. There is much that I do not know. When things do not make sense, it could be that I have some wisdom to add…or maybe I just don’t have enough information .
It happened again today. I was talking to Cole (my son-in-law who is an attorney) about the “Executive Order” where Obama is threatening unilateral action on immigration. I gave my opinion of the poor leadership being demonstrated during this lame duck season of a democratic controlled senate.
True to form, he shared that there was far more to the situation than I realized.
- There are previous examples of Executive Orders with regards to stopping deportation of illegal immigrants (ones that no one seems to be upset over)
- The pending action only applies to parents of natural born children who are by definition, citizens of this country
- Those who participate must be finger-printed (added to our tracking systems) and have no criminal history. They must have graduated High School and be current on paying their taxes
- And, this does not give them legal resident status (no green card is issued)
While I am not ready to fully embrace the President’s action, I had to admit that there are a lot of smart people who have spent more time thinking about this issue than I have. In fact, all I have been doing is spouting an opinion based on what the media tells me – and that is very little real information.
The next time something seems like a dumb idea…look deeper before criticizing.
Thanks for listening.
