Recently, I was involved in a discussion that had emotional intensity, high stakes, and strong opinions. As it progressed, one of the participants made a dramatic statement that went something like this: “I am sick and tired of people who over-promise and under-deliver. I want [our project] to have the reputation of under-promising and over-delivering!”
Me too! In fact, I want that to be the experience of ANY project that I am involved with. So, how do I do that? How do I successfully exceed expectations for a project that I am managing?
One way is this: If I understand my project well enough to know its critical path, then I have the secret sauce to shortening and beating my project schedule. How?
Find one task on the critical path and shorten it.
The result: If that task was truly on the Critical Path, then the project will finish early.
Corollary: If the project doesn’t finish early, that task wasn’t on the critical path.
Thanks for listening.
