I used to think that leaders and project managers who delegated everything were lazy. After all, if everyone else is doing all the work…what are THEY doing?
I used to design the projects so that they would orbit around me. I thought that was how I showed my importance…by providing all the information that everyone else needed.
Over time, I discovered why that is a poor design for a project. When I am at the center of the orbit, I am not available to serve and help others. My attention is consumed by the project and there is none left for the people
It is far better that the project orbits around someone else, so that I am available to coach, encourage, and empower others. The best projects I lead are the ones where each participant thinks they were invaluable to the success of the project.
When no one knows how much work it took me to help them win the project…I actually show better leadership than when it used to orbit around me.
Thanks for listening.
