As Christmas Day approaches, I remember my amazement as a new Christian when I learned about the complex, meticulous, and miraculous design of the birth of our Savior. Just imagine how God orchestrated these amazing details:
- Jesus had to be in a certain lineage. Both Mary and Joseph could trace their heritage to King David.
- Jesus had to be born in Bethlehem, but Mary and Joseph did not live there. They lived in Nazareth and needed a reason to travel
- Mary had to be a virgin as foretold by Isaiah. Therefore, she had to become pregnant after their betrothal, before the trip, and before the wedding.
- If Joseph had quietly divorced Mary (not married her), then Jesus would have been without an earthly father and would have been ineligible to be a perfect sacrifice for us (he would have become unclean – a bastard child).
There are hundreds more fascinating “coincidences” in the birth of Christ…but those few just astound me!
Thanks for listening.
