I was talking with Mike Wheatley, a good friend of mine who works as a Service Adviser for Hayes Chrysler Dodge Jeep. We were enthusiastically discussing how complicated it is to diagnose and repair today’s vehicles. Today’s technicians have to use laptops to interface with on-board computers, download sensor logs, and interpret statistical results. Plus, they still have to be able to turn a wrench and replace the non-functioning parts!
“But there are these old guys”, he continued, “who can still listen to how the car runs and tell you exactly what is wrong with it!”
His wife Denise leaned over and asked “Do they listen to their wives as well as they listen to their cars?”
(I laughed so hard that I nearly fell down a flight of stairs)
Now…please take minute and consider how insightful that question really is. Do I listen to my wife with ears trained like that? Let’s become master craftsmen at listening.
