Everybody else has probably forgotten about this the day after it occurred, but I have been deeply interested in what actually happened. I even created a “Google Alert” to keep me informed as the investigation unfolded. We now know the details behind what caused the power outage during the 2013 Super Bowl. What a relief. I can now move on with my life…
…well, not until you take a look at this hilarious spoof from Saturday Night Live. (It is well worth the 5 min to watch!)
I think there is a lot to learn from watching this event unfold. When our projects veer off course and we encounter huge setbacks, how do we handle the investigation?
- Do we openly speculate about who should be blamed?
- Do we focus everyone’s attention on the fact that the project is delayed?
- Do we believe that someone should be automatically punished or fired?
- Do we assume that my team members are hiding the root cause from me?
Or, do we productively add value to the investigation of the problem? Do we have patience for the 347 interviews to chase down the 19 different possible causes (before talking to the press)?
It often seems easier to blame someone quickly and publicly…rather than to be mature enough to wait and see what the investigation reveals.
Thanks for listening.
