Yesterday, 3 members of our team met at the storage site to confirm our inventory, verify the equipment was working and ready to deploy, and pull items that needed maintenance or cleaning. It was a simple task in the middle of a complex project, and each of us had our own idea as to what needed to be done.
And…nothing went according to plan.
When we walked away from the site, there was an interesting moment where we acknowledged that – although it felt like failure – it was a success. We didn’t accomplish what we expected, but the project was clearly pushed forward. The equipment is ready for integration. It just didn’t happen the way we expected.
Sometimes, I can get too attached to the plan that floats around in my head. Then, when things take a turn, it can be hard to let the project follow its own natural course. But, that is what happens when talented people come together to accomplish the task. The task changes when it encounters reality…and fresh thinking.
The key is to learn how to discern the difference between a task that is derailing…and the one that it following a better path. The smarter the participants…the more you can trust the path.
Thanks for listening.
