I made the switch to a smartphone about 3 years ago when I began to see the productivity improvements it could bring to my work life. My phone is more than a communication device…it is a mini-computer that assists me throughout the day.
Confession: I check my mail far too often…but overall I have been successful at avoiding gaming apps and other time wasters.
Here is my latest discovery: Scanning documents. I use an app called “CamScanner” (but there are others). Here is how I’ve used it so far:
- At business meals, I scan my receipts and email them to my admin, complete with names of those present and purpose of the meeting. This saves me a lot of time from lost receipts and faulty memories
- Today, I scanned a letter from my bank about a settlement of a credit card dispute. I saved the letter in my evernote app where I am keeping the rest of those documents. (Warning: Do not store passwords, account numbers, or other sensitive information in evernote, dropbox, or other storage apps. They are too vulnerable to outside hacking!)
- My wife has started using this to scan receipts for our tax records. She is also saving them in the evernote app. We believe this will save us hours of work in preparing our returns next year.
Documents are saved to a .jpg or .pdf format.
What other ideas do you have to use this productivity tool?
