Last February, Wade Phillips was named the Defensive Coordinator for the Denver Broncos. The interesting twist in that announcement is that he has been a head coach of 6 different NFL teams for a total of 12 seasons spanning almost 20 years. His teams have played in the post-season 5 times…and he has a record of winning 56% of his games as a head coach. Many would call him highly successful and would view this position as a “setback”.
And yet, at the press conference he said “I was a lousy head coach but I’m a pretty good defensive coordinator. That’s what I do well.”
It takes a lot of courage to admit that to yourself…and a HUGE amount of courage to announce that to the world.
- What are you lousy at?
- What are you pretty good at?
If you can be honest with yourself and take ownership of those answers, you will experience an unexplainable amount of success both personally and professionally…and you will learn to redefine what is truly a setback.
Thanks for listening.
