Julie Bauke reminds us as leaders that “talent is only on loan to us.” The talented people on our team are not to be “retained”…because that speaks about what is best for the organization. Instead, it is our responsibility to look out for what is best for our people.
In fact, it is possible to have such talented people that we start to think “They are too valuable to lose. I can’t lose them!” When people are in roles where they are such a rock star that the organization feels like they can’t function without them, the manager expends all of his effort trying to keep that person. Once we start doing that consciously (or subconsciously), we are already losing them. We have failed to consider what is best for them, and they will know it.
Julie gives these three questions to use for those teammates that we most treasure:
- “What else do you want to do?”
- “Do you want to do more of something? Less of something?”
- “Is there anything I can help to do to help you be more happy and productive where you are?”
Do you have people on your team that you can’t afford to lose? Beware….
Thanks for listening.
