Pollen comes every year, but it always sneaks up on me. This week, I walked out to my car and discovered the yellow coating that occurs daily for a couple of weeks every spring. I should have anticipated it…but the pollen caught me off guard yet again.
Most projects have something similar – those recurring problems that are never solved…they just keep repeating themselves (and surprising me when they do). Here are a few that come to mind:
- When Daylight Savings time starts/ends twice a year, there are always people who are caught off guard…and late/early to church on Sunday morning
- In every project, there always seems to be a person or department that gets left out of the communication loop
- There always seems to be some recurring piece of technology that hiccups at exactly the moment I need it to produce to hit my deadline.
These recurring problems could have been anticipated. Perhaps we don’t know exactly what the problem will be…but we know that something is going to happen when we least expect it.
Expect the unexpected. Give yourself (and your project) some margin to react when it happens.
Thanks for listening.
