Last night, I had the honor of participating in a discussion with Ronnie Brasfield of the Greater Life Counseling Center. He is a highly recommended counselor from many people here at 12Stone Church who have been helped by him. Our Compassion Team asked him to train some of our staff and volunteers.
Our topic was learning how to engage people in need. We came expecting to gather fresh skills and techniques on how to speak to people who come seeking financial assistance from our church. We wanted to sharpen our understanding of how to help them. We began the meeting with our pencils sharpened (or iPad’s turned on) and listened intently for clue’s to improve how we lead those conversations.
Instead, he helped us see the poverty of our own spirit. It turns out that I need as much healing as anyone. I am just as broken on the inside as the other person who is chasing money to cover their financial stupidity. I easily become an “Accidental Pharisee” (which is another book recommendation). I discovered my own tendency to “judge” the person I am trying to help.
It is the human condition. We are broken. We need a savior. When we realize that…we find fresh grace and compassion for others.
Are you aware of that? Or have you gotten busy with your career, family, and ministry and overlooked the poverty of your own soul?
Thanks for listening.
