I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help me God.
This is the oath people make as they step into the witness stand. It is the promise to tell the truth…not withholding information and not adding to it.
It is also the secret to freeing your soul. For years, I was intimidated by the authority and power of the leaders above me…and I tended to be selective in my truth-telling. Whenever I thought that the “real” truth would land me into hot water, I would massage the truth into a better story and only disclose those facts that made me look good. Over time, I learned to add to the truth to enhance everyone’s perception of me. Eventually, that led directly to lying…plain and simple.
Once the lies began…it took a huge amount of mental and emotional energy to manage all of them. They nearly wrecked me and my career. Fortunately, I figured this out before I did too much damage…and then discovered the freedom that comes from telling the truth (the whole truth and nothing but the truth).
Secrets, lies, half-truths, and embellishments are the pathway to personal destruction.
Where are you tempted to take shortcuts with the truth?
Thanks for listening.
