I am a huge fan of the show “The Last Ship“. In Season 2, Episode 12 there is a 2 minute segment where the ship Nathan James finds itself directly above an enemy submarine. We have a front row seat to both captains screaming orders at their crew, trying to outmaneuver the enemy vessel.
It was absolutely crazy…there were so many complicated tactics employed that I re-watched the scene several times to try to understand what just happened.
Don’t you wish you could do that in real life? Don’t you wish that you could hit “Pause” while you think through the options…and even hit “Rewind” to try again when something fails?
The truth is…just about anyone could figure out what to do if they had enough time to think through and evaluate options. But time is exactly what we usually don’t have. We have to be able to make High Speed Decisions…and make them correctly.
That is why captains usually have gray hair. The ability to make complicated decisions at high speed tends to come only with many years of training and experience. There are no shortcuts to gaining this experience. If you are young, be patient with the process. You will get your turn at being captain. And when you do, you will yearn for all the wisdom and experience that life has to offer.
Thanks for listening.
