I recently learned a new term. DTR is to “Define the Relationship”. It usually is applied to dating relationships, but I have another application.
Have you done a DTR with your contractors? Companies hire contractors and sometimes expect them to act like employees…or even owners. They desire the contractor to speak up, take initiative, and challenge the status quo. But that isn’t normal for a contractor.
- How much initiative should they take?
- How much empowerment do they have?
- Am I waiting on them or are they waiting on me?
This applies to many other relationships in the workplace. How about DTR’s for:
- Your team
- Your peers
- Your vendors
- Your customers
- Your boss
