I fell in love with my wife, because she was strong, independent, and compassionate towards others. Whenever we disagree, or have friction in our relationship, it is usually because she is strong, independent, or compassionate towards others (other than me).
I have a member of my team whom I thoroughly enjoy working with because he is strong, missional, and fully committed to excellence. Whenever we disagree or there is friction in our relationship it is because I perceive him to be strong-willed, fanatical about the mission, or committed to a level of excellence that I think doesn’t matter.
Can you see the similarities? In every relationship, the very attributes which we most admire, cherish, and appreciate are usually the ones that cause irritation, frustration, and disappointment. We actually start to blame the very qualities that we most admire.
As you (or others) become frustrated with one another…take a step back and remember why you connected so well in the first place.
It’s all a matter of perspective.
Thanks for listening.
