This week, Dan Reiland taught a leadership lesson to our team. He shared about the pressure we carry as leaders, and how it comes as a result of our loss of margin when the load we carry increases and approaches our leadership capacity.
Our margin is eroded when we carry “more” (more projects, more tasks, more responsibilities) and when the stuff we carry increases in “complexity.” It was an awesome moment that we shared together. Here was the thought about pressure that really caught my attention.
When we are approaching our limits and the pressure is becoming uncomfortable, our natural tendency is to try offloading the pressure on someone else who appears to be stronger…and more able to carry the pressure than we are. He reminded us that this is the wrong approach. It is our responsibility as leaders to learn how to live with greater pressure and to increase our capacity.
Are you feeling pressure? Are you tempted to push it off to someone else? Perhaps this is your reminder to take a deep breath and discover fresh capacity by carrying it instead.
Thanks for listening.
