Last week, our church staff gathered for leadership teaching, fellowship, and spiritual renewal. We do this once per month, and it is my favorite and most energizing event. My soul is renewed every time that our senior pastor invests in us.
He ended on a powerful note by reminding us that our spiritual passion (our internal “fire”) had to be tended to. Left alone, our passion tends to diminish and cool off…just as a campfire does when unattended. He said “you are responsible for your personal spiritual intensity like the priests of Israel were responsible for keeping the alter burning in the temple.” He encouraged us to make it a daily habit to get up and add wood to our fire. How? He gave us these 3 points:
- Chase God. How we chase Him matters. God cannot be found with a half heart.
- Be Holy. This comes as a result of our awe of God. When we experience His presence, our sin is revealed and we embrace becoming more like Him.
- Help People. When we chase God and become holy, we experience the freedom and ability to help others. But, when we cease to help people we cease to be holy.
Are you tending to your fire…or are you waiting for someone else to tend to it for you?
Thanks for listening.
