I recently received an email from someone requesting information from me. My first reaction was to become frustrated. Why?
Because this was the second time they asked me…and I already told them where to find and download the file. This appeared to be from someone who was too lazy to do it themselves.
Fortunately, I stopped to consider there may be another perspective. Perhaps they did try to use the site…and were unable to get what they need. I followed up on that hunch and found he had indeed logged in to our server and therefore did his part to try to get the file.
I am so glad that I did not “assume” he was taking shortcuts. I am grateful that I took a second look and believed in a better interpretation of that message.
These assumptions – where we fail to stop and consider another perspective – is the #1 reason for broken relationships, whether business or personal.
Do you stop and think after receiving emails like that…or do you just reply, based on your initial assumption?
Thanks for listening.
