I am excited because my brother and sister-in-law are visiting today. We don’t get to see each other often. But when we re-connect, it is like time has not passed. Steve & Sonia are two of the most genuine, selfless, and loving people I know.
I love to tell the story of visiting them many years ago. My friend Miles and I were finishing our ordination classes in NC and stopped by to have dinner and visit. Miles was peppering them with questions about me “BC” (Before Christ). There were far too many funny (and inappropriate) stories shared about my depth of stupidity in younger days.
There was a point where Sonia hesitated to speak. When I encouraged her to continue, she said “when I first met Chris, I really didn’t like him very much.” There was an awkward silence around the table as I began to second guess bringing Miles along for the visit. She continued “but, then he met Jesus and became an entirely different person. Now, I love him with all my heart.”
That is when it hit me. I thought that I was a pretty good person and “getting saved” meant that I was me…only better. It took Sonia’s candid response to realize how much I have changed. I am a completely different person than I was before.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
How about you? Are you a new creation?
Thanks for listening.
