Thinking is hard work. I used to find myself in situations where the problems were large, and I would decide to wait for someone else to do the heavy lifting. Situations like:
- Somebody says “help me add these numbers” and I didn’t even engage my brain in the exercise. I waited until someone else produced an answer and then I agreed with that person.
- Or, I would join a meeting without doing any pre-work…expecting that someone else has thought through the agenda and issues to make it easy on me. Even worse, there were meetings where I keep quiet because I did not spent any time thinking on the topic. (That means I added no value to the process)
- Sometimes I could see large projects that were coming my way, but I waited until someone asked me before I started working on them. I left the hard work of “thrashing” to everyone else.
I have greatly improved my discipline over time, but thinking “deep” and “well” remains surprisingly difficult.
Do you do the hard work of thinking? Or do you wait for someone else to do that heavy lifting for you?
Thanks for listening.
