Here is another illustration from one of my favorite TV shows. During an episode of Blue Bloods, the youngest son of Tom Selleck was caught in a tough decision. His partner had made a questionable arrest, and Jamie faced a tough decision over how to respond. Here are some interesting observations:
- Someone else put him in the position to make a tough decision
- He could not avoid making the decision
- The decision was going to cost him deeply, no matter what he decided
I found that a compelling and common situation. I often find myself in similar situations. What should I do when someone forces me into a corner like that? How do I decide to respond in those moments? Tom Selleck coached his son that these three things must be in alignment to make a good decision:
- Your head
- Your heart
- Your oath of office
He concluded with “It is as simple and as complicated as that.” What great advice!
Thanks for listening.
