I just re-watched the classic movie Men of Honor. It is the story of Carl Brashear, the first African American (and later the first amputee) US Navy Diver. It chronicles his struggle against racism and the developing (and difficult) relationship with Leslie Sunday, the man who trained him. I am humbled by this true story of greatness in a human being…his struggle against injustice and never giving up when obstacles (in the form of people) rose up against him.
I have never been confronted with such evil. The most extreme obstacle I usually encounter is simply when intelligent people have a difference of opinion…or when my projects are under pressure from the collision of schedules and budgets. Neither are the kind of oppression that Carl Brashear had to face.
I aspire to better than that. I aspire to show that kind of courage and strength when facing obstacles. I aspire to demonstrate that kind of honor and dignity.
How about you? Are you inspired to be that person?
Thanks for listening.
