I just finished listening to a podcast from “RadioLab” where they talked about technology that is going to change our world. I had no idea this existed…but I shouldn’t be surprised. There is now software that will:
- Modify an audio recording as easily as typing a new script
- Modify facial expressions in a video by a facial reenactment
Therefore, these can be used together to completely change what we think of as recorded history. Check out this amateur attempt to change a recent speech by President Obama: http://futureoffakenews.com/
The reporters on this podcast were able to do that with no money and little time. Just imagine – we are really going to get fake news in just a few short years. And it won’t just be public figures…it could very well be you and me.
This comes at a time in human civilization when morals are in free-fall and people seem to be less trustworthy than ever before. If news and social media are a hotbed of half-truths and manipulation of facts….how much more will this accelerate that decline?
My mom and dad pounded into me the value of having a good name (reputation), and I thought they were too zealous about it. But now, I treasure that lesson. I passionately work to protect my name by telling the truth…avoiding moral shortcuts…and taking responsibility for my mistakes.
If someone were to make a fake video of me acting immoral, I trust that I will be vindicated. I believe that everyone who knows me would stand by me.
How about you? Will your character and reputation survive the fake news?
Thanks for listening.
