Josh (our database support tech) uses the 5-15 rule to help teach others how to grow in their knowledge of the system. It is designed to encourage each of us to build our skills without building frustration when we encounter something we don’t know how to do.
The 5-15 rule is this:
Whenever we encounter a problem we can not solve, we should spend at least 5 minutes trying to figure out the solution for ourselves. This helps prevent us from taking shortcuts, giving up too easily, and asking questions that we should be able to answer ourselves.
However, we should not spend more than 15 minutes trying to figure out the problem for ourselves. This prevents us from wasting too much time trying to solve problems that we legitimately need Josh’s help with.
Your business, job, or industry may have different time parameters. But the lesson is the same. Don’t quit too early trying to solve problems yourself…and don’t take too long, either. What are your problem solving parameters?
Thanks for listening.
