I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who was wrestling over whether to stay or go. He was having such angst over the decision (saying he didn’t want to be a quitter) that it seemed clear to me that he needed a better set of filters to make his decision. Here is what I gave him:
Are You Called? If God has put you in your current position (traceable to a “burning bush” moment or a clear sense of His intention for your life), then you have to stay until He releases you. Frustration with your boss does not release you. Frustration over your pay or your hours does not release you. Only God (through the authority above you) can release you from your position.
Are You Captive to the income? There are plenty of positions where the income is not replaceable in the open market. I have one friend who makes nearly $200,000 per year for a small firm due to his unique experience and company knowledge. I have another friend who never went to college, yet built technical expertise that brings him an $80,000 income. Neither of them could make that same amount of money in the general marketplace. No one else would hire them and compensate them so richly. They can’t leave because they depend on their income and can’t replace it elsewhere.
If these are not true for you…then you have a choice to make. Do you like your job or not? If you don’t like your job…if you aren’t called to it…and if you can find another job with similar income elsewhere…then start looking.
What have I missed? Isn’t it that simple?
Thanks for listening!
