A good friend of mine is a musician who is quite gifted. His talents have made him a “rock star” in certain arenas…and his resume includes the NY Metropolitan. But, he recently discovered what it feels like to step out into new territory. He wrote me saying:
…I’m finally getting MY turn and it makes me feel really “naked”. [My wife] is such an incredible musician that she’s always covered up my musical “flaws”. Now, I am on my own. I never realized until now how comforting it’s been to be her right-hand man.
…but it also has kept me from getting better because she is on such a different plane. I let myself “relax” over the years and lean on her skill…
That is more common than you think. Many of us relax and fail to grow because we lean on the skill of others to cover our weaknesses…and we don’t even realize it.
What about you? When have you stepped out and taken new territory without leaning on someone else’s skill?
Thanks for listening.
