This is a great thought from one of my leaders.
We were talking about a member of our team who tends to pick the wrong topics when talking to others. We were trying to “diagnose” the issue and he hit the nail on the head with this summary:
- When speaking “upward” (to leaders above us), we need to elevate our perspective and talk about the bigger issues (less detail)
- When speaking “downward” (to leaders below us), we need to narrow our perspective and talk about the smaller issues (more detail)
Yes, there are exceptions. Sometimes leaders need to participate in details…and sometimes followers need to hear more about the vision. But, we all need to learn how to “upscale” or “downscale” a conversation, based on who we are speaking to!
Thanks for listening.
