The purpose of Project Management is to bring predictability and reduce risk in whatever endeavor we undertake. We use our various systems and tools to create a plan, develop a budget, assign responsibilities, and predict schedules. We try our best to reduce chaos and eliminate surprises.
However, when we build our ministry plans, it is possible to do such a good job of addressing every detail that we completely remove God’s ability to show up and deliver a miracle. Consider this: if we are able to create and execute a project to build the church on our own, why do we need God to show up?
For years, I tried to manage ministry projects as though we could actually plan the miracle. I have finally learned to embrace project plans that allow for the mess. A little messiness gives room for God to move. We can’t organize our way into a God moment.
But, here is what we can do. We can organize so extremely well…that it is obvious when God shows up. By excellence in planning, we can be convinced that the miracle did not come from our own brilliance.
Thanks for listening.
