Clarity can be one of the greatest gifts that a project manager can give to their team.
- Clarity of roles and responsibilities
- Clarity of schedule, budget, and desired outcomes
- Clarity of decisions
Often, we impede the progress of our own team when we are fuzzy and unclear. I will never forget my first office relocation project when the receptionist asked me who should buy soap for the lobby restrooms. She asked “Is that my job to maintain since I am responsible for first impressions…or is the facility team responsible?”
My response was “I don’t care.”
How stupid. While either answer would have worked just fine (“you” or “them”)…all I did was create confusion. Since she was a high initiative person, she bought the soap. That led to a decision by the facility team to stop buying soap for the rest of the facility. It wasn’t until months later that I began to realize the inefficiency I created when I failed to give clarity through an easy decision.
Provide clarity to your team. They will be grateful for the gift!
Thanks for listening.
