I must hear that phrase a dozen times a day….and I probably use it even more often! (smile) Here are some thoughts I have about asking for (and giving) favors from others.
We tend to keep a conscious or unconscious tally of these favors. There is a mental bank account we have with other people, and it is constantly being adjusted. Whether I realize it or not, other people are sizing me up when I approach them for help.
- Has he made more deposits or withdrawals in my life?
- Are his withdrawals small and painless, or does he significantly reduce the account balance when he stops by?
- Do his withdrawals get paid back with interest?
People who overdraw accounts (those who make too many emotional withdrawals) go bankrupt and loose their ability to borrow. No more favors.
Next time you need to ask for a favor from someone, first consider what your emotional balance might be. You may need to start making some deposits instead.
Thanks for listening.
