When I was returning from my last outing, my sailing instructor happened to be working on a boat nearby. Knowing that he would be evaluating my performance, I worked extra hard to complete the docking maneuver without making any mistakes.
But true to form…I had some difficulty getting the lines secured…and he said “you forgot what I taught you. Let me show you how it’s done!”
At that, my ears closed and my back stiffened up. “What, are you going to scold me?” I asked? “Nope…I’m going to school you” he replied. And he did. When he was done, I had to confess that I was impressed with how simple his system for docking was. He showed me a better way.
I wish I could do that more often. Why am I so defensive when someone wants to help me improve my skills?
We could all improve our game…if we let someone else “school us”. (Even you)
Thanks for listening.
