Two years ago, I decided to learn how to sail. I hired an instructor and spent over 40 hours on the lake as I learned to operate the boat and navigate the channel. I spent hours of study and later took a written test to become certified with the ASA.
When friends and family come along, they like to participate in the action. So, I involve them in the process of adjusting the sails. But, I find that I get frustrated when I show them what to do…and 5 minutes later, they forget or cannot repeat their assigned task.
That is silly. I now have had over 2 years of experience with my sailboat. I have made every mistake myself while I was training. It takes time to learn.
That led to the realization that I struggle with the same issue at work. Therefore, I re-committed myself to be patient with others as they learn.
How about you? Are you patient with others as they train?
Thanks for listening.
