When tasks or projects go sideways, I can easily attach my disappointment to other people. I internally blame someone…and start to build a case in my head where they are placed in the category of “at fault”.
However, when I am face-to-face with the other person, all that blame melts away.
- I remember how much I care for them as a person
- I am reminded that they are smart and capable at their job
- I learn from their perspective, and discover that things aren’t as “cut and dried” as I first thought
- I realize that most (if not all) of my blame is unfounded
The next time you start building a case in your head, do not write an email…schedule a meeting. Talk face-to-face. Protect the relationship.
You will be a better leader if you make this your practice!
Thanks for listening.
