My boss is. He is probably the smartest leader I have ever met.
When I took initiative on a project last week, I thought I was helping move the organization forward. Instead, I discovered that I took action prematurely. My boss wasn’t ready for me to announce the project to the entire organization. Oooops.
Stop and think: What would your boss have done? What would YOU have done?
Here is what my boss did. He sent an email to the senior leadership team (not the entire organization as I had done) and announced that he was slowing down the project. And he did it in a way that was totally honoring to me and protected my relationship to the rest of the staff.
- He informed them that he was slowing down the project (he took responsibility)
- He affirmed my initiative rather than condemning it, saying “This is not uncommon amongst a team of strong go-getters who know how to make things happen! I love that spirit!”
- He affirmed the need for a decision, with “This is a critically important issue. However, more conversation and understanding is needed”
Now, I am even MORE committed to serve him and follow his leadership.
How about you? Are you this supportive when your people take action before you are ready?
Thanks for listening.
