I’ve shared before that the TV show Madam Secretary is one of my favorites. In the most recent episode, Tim Daly (playing the husband of the Secretary of State) delivered this quote:
Morals are how we treat the people we know. Ethics are how we treat the people we don’t know.
I searched for an original author and couldn’t find one. I found several who who refer to this as the definition of the link between morality and ethics.
Most people I know treat their friends and family with a reasonable amount of kindness. They give the benefit of the doubt…they give assistance when needed…and they find ways to forgive the hurt that inevitably occurs in a relationship.
But very few people extend that behavior to people they don’t know. It is far more common to blame a stranger…to avoid giving a stranger assistance when needed…and to harbor ill will if a stranger has accidentally hurt us.
- Society is strengthened by the application of ethics
- Society is weakened by the absence of ethics
How are you doing at this?
Thanks for listening.
