I was recently asked for advice on how to pitch an idea. The person asking for help was trying to convince his boss to agree to a plan that would cost more than originally expected. His question was basically: “How do I sell my idea?”
I reminded him of the nature of the leader he was trying to sell…
- He thinks 100x faster than we do
- He already understands more than we give him credit for
- He trusts you
- He doesn’t need a long explanation or justification
- He only needs you to demonstrate you know what needs to be done
And, he won the pitch. He was told “go get quotes” and permission is sure to follow.
The key was knowing his audience. Do you know your boss well enough to know how to sell your idea? Sometimes, long justifications is the worst approach.
Thanks for listening.
