The answer is both.
No matter where we are in the organization, we have to lead AND follow. There will always be someone above us and (usually) will always have people who follow us..
An interesting observation about leadership: Leaders at the highest levels are usually the best followers. The CEO has to submit and follow the direction of the board of directors. The Senior Pastor has to submit and follow God’s plans for the church. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the highest ranking US military officer) must submit to the will of the President.
How can you become a better leader? Try working on your “following” skills. If you can become a better follower, it will undoubtedly improve your ability to lead.
