Self-imposed deadlines are a valuable tool. We use them to schedule work to be accomplished by a particular time. Deadlines help motivate us, clarify expectations, and measure progress.
This blog is an example. I have committed to writing one every day and it has to be done before I go to bed (and scheduled for delivery the next morning).
But, sometimes I get behind and meeting the deadline hurts more than it helps. So I waited until this morning to write my post. As the pressure to complete a task increases, it helps to understand if the deadline is real or self-imposed. Usually, they are real…but last night’s pressure to write was arbitrary.
Arbitrary deadlines can be moved. They are made to serve me…not the other way around.
However, Do not apply this thought to second-guessing our bosses deadlines. It does not matter if those are arbitrary or critical to project. Either way, I drop everything to deliver when he (she) asks.
Thanks for listening.
