The 12Stone Parking Team has always run on a unique balance of two types of leaders. We have Team Captains and we have Firefighters. These men (and women) share many common qualities that we all admire:
- Both can assess and solve problems
- Both can mobilize people to get the job done
- Both carry leadership “weight”
However, there is a marked difference between these two that makes them uniquely suited for their different roles on the team.
Team Captains carry ownership. They have committed to stay at their post in spite of what happens around them. They keep the team together and aligned. Their leadership is crucial the the steady, on-going delivery of service.
Firefighters carry relief. They race to the fire when something goes wrong. They rescue the team when we get into trouble. Their leadership is crucial to surviving the unexpected surprises that come our way.
Most organizations need FAR more Team Captains than Firefighters. However, neither leader is more important than the other. They are both vital to the success of our projects. It’s just that we tend to over-value the firefighter when everything goes haywire. And we tend to under-value them when everything is running smoothly. Let’s recognize the value of both types of leaders on our teams.
Thanks for listening.
