Projects and teams have their own inertia or momentum. At the beginning, we all have to work extra hard to get the ball rolling…and eventually the project seems to gain speed and barrel along with a mind of its own!
Large momentum in a project can help us (when headed in a good direction)…or it can hurt us (when headed in a bad direction). As Project Managers, it is important for us to invest early with a lot of energy to build momentum towards our goals and objectives. However, if we invest too much too soon, we might send the project down a path that we can’t recover from.
That is why thrashing early is so very important. Thrashing is the process of confirming that our goals and objectives:
- Are achievable with the budget we are given
- Are reasonable in the timeline we are given
- Have the support of everyone needed for success
- Have no hidden surprises waiting for us around the corner
I am leading a project which is building a lot of momentum…but is still missing the clarity that everyone needs to execute well. So, my challenge for Monday is to focus on thrashing to gain more clarity before the momentum takes it beyond my control. Once that is accomplished, I will pour on the energy to build momentum!
How about your project? Do you have the momentum you need for success?
Thanks for listening.
