I cling to useless things
I actually noticed it first in the lives of others, because I could not see it in myself.
Recently, we have been preparing to move my 90 year old grandmother into an assisted living apartment. She kept packing useless items that everyone knew she would never use. Then, I listened to a friend who talked excitedly about buying those same kind of useless items. Then, I learned of several widows, whose husbands had collected a bunch of “toys” that are now being disposed of.
Now…I am able to see it in myself. As I have started my garage cleanup project, I am struggling to get rid of useless stuff, and find myself wanting to keep useless things with thoughts like:
- I might need it someday (scrap wood, nuts and bolts, etc)
- It has sentimental value (a broken NC State license plate from my car when I was in college)
- I don’t know what it is (countless items) and it might be important
- It will be expensive to replace
So, I am renewing my efforts to let go of things I don’t need…so that I can give my best time and energy to the things I do need (e.g. relationships).
Thanks for listening.
