Every once in a while, my boss will stick his head in my door and say “You want to go to lunch?” Here is what I have learned to understand about that moment:
- It is a genuine invitation for relational time. Unless he specifically declares an agenda, this is just for fun.
- Therefore, I am free to accept or decline. There are no consequences for being unable to participate.
- If I go with him to lunch, we always have a wonderful time together…but we also find time to talk about work topics that are important to me.
By inviting me to lunch, by boss has given me an opportunity to lead “up”. I am being given a chance to set the agenda…to learn from him…and if I am well prepared, I can sometimes influence the future agenda of our organization.
Did you catch that? Can you see the importance of being prepared…and not just “wander in” to this conversation?
Action Item: Keep a list of important (and well thought) discussion topics. Have it close by at all times, especially when the boss calls!
Thanks for listening.
